What to do with all the Violence in the Book of Joshua
Joshua is a book full of battles. Critics decry the repeated violence in the narrative. What are we to make of the wholesale destruction of the Canaanites? Particularly when we so often read that the Lord commands the annihilation of all the people, including women and children. Is this really God saying these things or is there something else happening behind the story? How can we can reconcile a New Testament God of love with what appears to be a blood-thirsty vindictive god in the book of Joshua.
