Fostering community: Baby shower hosted for refugee family
You might remember that last spring our church held a Halal luncheon for the refugees who had just arrived to our region. It was at this church luncheon that Jo-Ann Lyon met a couple of Syrian women whom she exchanged phone numbers with. During the last year, Jo-Ann has become close to these women and their families.
Jo-Ann’s discipleship group recently held a baby shower for the new baby ‘Sandy’ born to one of the families. There was prayer, conversation and of course lots of food. It was a uniquely Canadian experience for the Syrian women as they had never been to a baby shower before. The receiving of gifts was a great hit. Gracepointers donated new and gently used toys and baby clothing for the families.
Jo-Ann and her husband Ted helped two of the men to gain employment in Surrey and Ted assisted one of the men to find a vehicle. Ted and Jo-Ann have displayed biblical hospitality to these new Canadian friends with their continual support. The kids call Jo-Ann their “Canadian grandma” and it such a blessing to be in a community of care and support.
